What should I look for when choosing a bed?

Five key things to bear in mind for a restful night’s sleep

It can sometimes feel like the choices are endless when it comes to buying a new bed, and it’s often hard to know exactly what you need. We’re here to help you find the perfect set up for a restful night’s sleep, so we’ve put together some tips around key things to bear in mind when you’re choosing a new bed.

Size

We will always recommend that you buy the biggest bed that will fit your room. This is for two reasons; the first is that the more space you have, the less disturbed you will be during the night if your partner moves around. The more room you both have to run and relax, the less likely you are to disturb the other person, which is only a good thing!

The second reason is temperature control. When you are in the deep sleep stage, your body cools down – an essential element of the deep sleep cycle. The smaller your bed, the closer you will sleep to your partner and the more heat you will produce, which tends to have a poor effect on sleep. When it’s time to sleep, you need to be able to move into your own half of the bed to let your body cool and not be affected by your partner’s body heat.

Mattress styles

At Westend Bed Company, we have a fantastic range of mattress styles from brands that have years of knowledge and expertise when it comes to what’s needed for a good night’s sleep. From organic, sustainably sourced materials to mattresses that are expertly engineered to follow the contours of the body and alleviate pressure points for additional support, there’s something for everyone.

Consider all the elements

It’s worth thinking about all the individual elements that make up your bed. For example, you might think the mattress needs replacing but the divan is fine, or vice versa, but it’s important to remember mattresses and divans are made as a unit that complement each other. If an old mattress has dipped and sagged, then there’s a good chance the base is damaged. A new mattress will follow the contours of an old base which will significantly increase the wear on the new mattress.

To get the most out of a new mattress, you want to invest in a bed that will last for years to come and not have to go through the headache of replacing different parts at different times. Our team are always on hand to help, so if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

Individual styles

It’s important to remember that everyone is different, and that can be true of you and your partner. You may have different sleep styles, support requirements, allergies to consider, or just differing opinions on what’s comfortable! It’s hard to find a specific mattress that fits every individual need, but by booking in for one of our complimentary, personal sleep consultations, our expert team can help you work through your requirements to help you choose a mattress that works for you. We look at your lifestyle, sleep routine and individual requirements to help you choose the perfect bed that supports your body and your sleep cycle.

We often find that clients tend to stick with what’s familiar, understandably because they don’t know any different! You may have been using a bed for the past 10 years that’s totally wrong for you (it could have been too soft or too firm), and as a result it’s easy to feel that you should be ordering the same style again.

During the consultation period we’ll look at alternative options to see what works for you. Often, because it’s not a familiar feel, it’s easy to assume that it’s the wrong choice of mattress, but it’s only once we understand what happens during your sleep cycle that we understand that just because a mattress feels familiar, it doesn’t mean it’s right!
