Why Are Natural Materials Best In A Mattress?

The materials that go into a mattress are absolutely vital in creating the right comfort and feel. The craftsmen who create all of our beds have years of experience working with natural materials to ensure the right blend is created to ensure the perfect feel.

Each mattress in our showroom is packed with generous layers of natural and breathable fibres, including a blend of fleece wool, cashmere, silk, horsehair and alpaca wool. These soft and durable natural fibres promote air flow and wick away moisture, which helps to regulate body temperature whilst sleeping, ensuring you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.

But why do the craftsmen use these specific materials?

Wool

Wool is a soft, durable and sustainable fibre and it acts as a personal climate control unit – keeping you warm and cosy in the winter, and cool and comfortable in the summer. The wool ventilates the mattress, promoting airflow and allowing it to breathe. Wool also has moisture-wicking properties and can absorb twice as much moisture as cotton. This not only creates a comfortable sleeping environment in terms of cosiness but it also prevents the growth of bacteria, fungi and dust mites.

Horsehair

The fibres in horsehair are strong and springy meaning they won’t break or lose their natural flexibility, which helps to keep the mattress support. It also helps to support the contours of your body while you sleep. Much like wool, horsehair also has its own inbuilt ventilation system where moisture passes through the hollow strands taking the humidity with it and away from the body, creating a comfortable sleeping environment.

Cashmere

Bed makers use cashmere to add the soft and luxurious element to the mattress. The fibre’s high moisture content allows its insulation properties to change with the air temperature and humidity helping you to keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Silk

Similar to cashmere, silk provides the luxurious element to our mattresses. Silk is very strong and durable, and is also very breathable, allowing air to pass through it quickly. As with the other materials used to make mattresses, silk also has great moisture-absorbing and thermal qualities to help you keep the optimal body temperature whilst you sleep, whatever the time of year or whatever the temperature.

Alpaca Fleece

Alpaca fleece is made up of hollow fibres that allow moisture to move freely, keeping you cool and dry. The fibres are incredibly sturdy and strong, providing a durable mattress filling. Alpaca fleece is also hypoallergenic meaning it doesn’t harbour dust mites or their allergens. Ideal for asthma or allergy sufferers!

All of the materials used in our mattresses are carefully sourced and blended together by craftsmen who have a wealth of experience working in the bed industry. Their skill and expertise, combined with the properties of these natural materials all come together to create the bed of your dreams.
